Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin
It is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Shirley J. Carpenter, known affectionately by many as Jeanie. Born on January 9, 1935, in Loyal, WI, Shirley was a beacon of compassion, generosity, thoughtfulness, and ambition that touched many lives in her 90 years. Her journey came to an end on March 12, 2025, peacefully at home with her family by her side, leaving behind a legacy of love, faith, and service.
In her hometown of Loyal, where she graduated as salutatorian in 1953, Shirley's ambitious spirit was evident. She married her beloved William Carpenter later that same year and together they moved to Wisconsin Rapids. Even while working as an office manager at JCPenney, Shirley found time to pursue her passions. She was a dedicated vegetable gardener, a masterful baker, a keen walker, and a joyful traveler. A gifted soprano, she lent her voice to the choir of the United Methodist Church, where she was an active member and lay servant. In her later years, she and William discovered a love for acting and became regulars at the community theatre.
Shirley's generous nature shone through her service to others. She was an officer for the United Methodist Women for many years, and even once held the position of state president. Alzheimer's may have slowed her down, but it did not dampen her spirit or her commitment to her faith, family, and friends. She continued to live life with passion, visiting the elderly and offering them companionship and comfort. Her family is deeply grateful for the compassionate hospice care she received in her final days.
She is survived by her loving husband, of 71 years, William, and their children, David (Cathy), Randy (Lori), Todd, and Tami (Graham) Coulson; her sisters, Rachel (Craig) Johnston and Rebecca O'Black, along with 9 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren, will remember her fondly. She is preceded in death by her parents, Christian and Norma Oestreich, and sisters, Bobbie Lis and Diane Meyer.
A visitation will be held at 9:00 am followed by a memorial service at 11:00 am on Saturday, March 22, 2025, at the Wisconsin Rapids United Methodist Church, 441 Garfield Street, Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin, 54494. We invite you to join us in celebrating the remarkable life of Shirley J. Carpenter.
