Maverick Skytland Obituary

Maverick (Mavvy) Skytland (4/18/17 – 2/6/26) Maverick came to us with God’s help in late October 2018. He had been rescued along with 15 other Scottish Terriers from a puppy mill. The rescue lady vetted all to forever homes and we made the trip to SD to get him. He was malnourished and very fearful. When we first set him down in our large, fenced yard, his foot touched a fallen leaf, and he was petrified. Through prayerfully using the positive principles of love, care, compassion, empathy, perseverance, patience and one day at a time, we helped him to be a vigorous, happy and healthy Scottie. I still recall the first time he looked at me (mid-November) with trust in his eyes. Our backyard was his domain and he dearly loved investigating the fence line, chasing rabbits and squirrels, playing with balls and rope toys and playing “catch the Mavvy” that turned into zooming to his heart’s content. He loved other dogs (not so many people/ especially not men) and liked playing with his cousin “Belle” and his groomer’s dog “Mabel”. One of my favorite children’s authors is Cynthia Rylant and in her book, Dog Heaven she says that our dog’s angel will take him back to his yard to sniff everything out and check on his owners. I can just see the tree that Mavvy will peek out from behind. God Bless Him. Mavvy loved his home as well and all his special places: upstairs lying in a pool of sunshine (he’d also hide favorite new toys up there), his corner of the couch, beside mom or dad on their recliners particularly in the evening, and his special bed crate next to mom at night. He was an excellent traveler in his crate and would go with us up north for cabin time, and down to Port Washington to see our family. He loved his “Aunt Josie” and “Uncle Eamonn”, our grandkids. He will join his dog siblings in the “goodie woods” at our cabin up north. His will be the newest cross of 6. My friend sent me these words she could imagine Mavvy saying. “Thank you for taking such good care of me from the first day I came to live with you. Even the angels couldn’t have done better than you did. You gave me a glimpse of heaven on earth with all the love you and “dad” blessed me with.
