Jere Newby

–

Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin

Jere R. Newby, age 85, of Wisconsin Rapids passed away Saturday, June 21, 2025 at Cranberry Court in Wisconsin Rapids.

Jere was born December 10, 1939 in Wisconsin Rapids to Fred and Margaret (Galganski) Newby. He married LaVonne Weiss on December 6, 1958 at SS Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Wisconsin Rapids.

Jere was employed by Consolidated Papers Inc., Biron Division for over 40 years retiring in 2001.

An avid outdoorsman, Jere found great joy in nature. He had a lifelong love for hunting, trapping, and fishing, and he welcomed the company of anyone who wished to join him in the woods or on the water. Friends and neighbors will remember his quiet generosity, often stopping by with a bucket of fresh-caught bluegills for those willing to take them. His passion for the outdoors was matched only by his love of golf, a sport he excelled in, having made five hole-in-ones during his lifetime. In retirement, he continued to share that passion by working part-time at Homestead Golf Club and collecting golf memorabilia. He especially treasured the opportunity to teach his oldest granddaughter to golf, passing on both skill and enthusiasm for the game.

A dedicated football fan, Jere loved a good game, especially when it came to cheering for his beloved Chicago Bears. Living in Wisconsin, he took his fair share of teasing for it, but always kept a knowing eye on the Green Bay Packers. His lighthearted loyalty sparked many spirited conversations and was a fun reminder of his playful nature.

Jere is survived by his wife, LaVonne; son, Douglas (Mary) Newby of DePere; daughter, Michelle (Jeff) Zimmerman of Wisconsin Rapids; grandchildren: Alyssa (Jeremiah) Moran, Apryl (Jake) Fletcher, and Aaron (Joe O’Shasky) Zimmerman; great-grandchildren: Madison and Fynn Fletcher and Hudson and Henry Moran; and sister, Mary Kroll. He was preceded in death by his parents and son, Terry Newby.

There will be no public services or visitation.

Herman-Taylor Funeral Home is honored to be assisting the family.
