Gregory Steven Keip, affectionately known as Greg, of Kellner, Wisconsin, age 65, passed away on October 20, 2026, at UW Hospital in Madison, surrounded by his loved ones. Born on February 25, 1961, to George and Grace Keip, Greg grew up in Wisconsin Rapids. In 1982, he married his high school sweetheart, Jean (Severson) Keip. Together, they built a life grounded in love, family, hard work,
and an appreciation for life’s simple pleasures.
Greg worked as a millwright before retiring in 2016. A hardworking man who could fix nearly anything, he never shied away from a challenge. Retirement gave him more time to enjoy the things he loved and take on whatever project came his way. One of Greg’s favorite retirement traditions was his weekly Wednesday trip to good ol’ Kellner Dump Day. Wednesdays also meant time with his dear friend, affectionately known as “Banger.” While the ladies enjoyed their weekly get-together, lovingly called “Bitch Night,” Greg and Banger had a standing tradition of their own. Those Wednesdays reflected Greg’s appreciation for simple routines, good friendships, and time together.
Greg loved taking something old, recognizing its potential, and bringing it back to life. Whether repairing equipment, restoring a forgotten treasure, or helping solve a problem, he found satisfaction in working with his hands. Family, friends, and acquaintances knew they could count on him when something needed fixing—or
when they needed a listening ear. An outdoorsman at heart, Greg enjoyed camping, hunting, fishing, gunsmithing, and time at the shooting range. He found happiness in a peaceful day outdoors, time in his shop, and a freshly mowed lawn. He took great pride in caring for his home and yard, where even the most determined weed had little chance of survival. Greg was practical, strong-willed, and occasionally stubborn, but always genuine. He believed in getting up, making the most of each day, and facing challenges rather than dwelling on them. Independence, hard work, and the satisfaction of a job well done mattered deeply to him. Beneath his determined nature was a kind and compassionate heart. Greg was an exceptional listener and natural problem solver who offered advice without judgment. His patience, understanding, and willingness to help left a lasting impression on many. Above all, Greg’s greatest pride and joy was his family. He cherished his wife, children, and grandchildren and his dog Magee, he took tremendous pride in their lives. Nothing brought him greater happiness than having everyone together. Whether for a special occasion or an ordinary day, he treasured the conversation, laughter, and togetherness.
The family extends its deepest gratitude to the UW medical team and staff who cared for Greg throughout his journey, especially the Infectious Disease Department. Their compassion, expertise, dedication, and unwavering support brought comfort during an especially difficult time and will always be remembered.
Greg is survived by his loving wife, Jean; his son, Jason, and grandchildren Kristina, Mackenzie, and Tanner; his daughter, Kim (Jeremiah) Kuske; granddaughter Haileyanna Schober, and step-grandchildren Robert and Ivy Kuske. He is also survived by his sister, Sandra (Mike) Williams, along with many extended family and friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, George and Grace, and his brother, Garry Keip. Greg leaves a legacy of love, kindness, determination, and lessons shared through his words and actions. He taught those around him that happiness need not be complicated, that hard work has value, and that life’s greatest rewards often come from helping others and appreciating what is right in front of you.
His life was never about having the most but about making the most of what he had.
He will be deeply missed, forever loved, and remembered in the everyday moments he cherished—a quiet morning up north, a project waiting to be finished, a perfectly mowed lawn, and, most importantly, the gathering of the family he loved so dearly.
A casual celebration of Greg’s life will be held on Tuesday, October 27, from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Herman-Taylor Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 2201 Chestnut St, Wisconsin Rapids, WI 54494.
