Faith was born in Wisconsin Rapids on August 17, 1946 to Alvin and Edna Haferman. She became a child of God in her baptism at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Her Christian education began with grades K-8 at St. Paul’s Lutheran School followed by grades 9-12 at Fox Valley Lutheran High School in Appleton. She graduated from Dr. Martin Luther College in New Ulm, MN with a Bachelor of Science degree in Education and earned post-graduate credits from Wayne State Colle and Dr. Martin Luther College.
Teaching was Faith’s passion. She taught grades K-4 at Gethsemane Lutheran School in Omaha, NE (11 years); grade 1 at Trinity Lutheran School in Brillion, WI (4 years); and grades 1-2 at Immanuel Lutheran School in Waukegan, IL (11 years). She also taught the Kindergarten Education Enrichment Program for Knowledge Learning Corporation in Gurnee, IL (11 years); Celebrations at St. Vincent (1 year); St. Lawrence Early Childhood Center (3 years); and Little Lambs Early Childhood Program at St. Paul’s Lutheran School (8 years).
Literacy was very important to Faith. She tutored an adult student for the Literacy Council and was a Reading Mentor for the United Way at Humke Elementary School in Nekoosa and Mead Elementary in Wisconsin Rapids.
Aside from teaching, Faith also worked in Guest Services at Six Flags Great America in Gurnee, IL (11 seasons); did store inventories for RG1S Inventory Service in Gurnee (11 years); and worked as a companion/caregiver for Gentle Home Care in Deerfield, IL (7 years).
Care for the aging was another passion. Faith worked as an Activity Aide at North Shore Terrace in North Chicago, IL (1 year); Resident Aide at Harmony Assisted Living in Stevens Point (1 year); and at Harmony (now Cranberry Court Assisted Living) in Wisconsin Rapids (6 years).
Faith’s love for Jesus manifested itself in spearheading donations and collections for: PADS (Public Action to Deliver Shelter) in Waukegan, IL; COOL (Community Outreach of Lutherans) in Waukegan; Lutherans for Life and Pregnancy Counseling Centers; The Wise Penny (a thrift store in Waukegan supporting Shoreland Lutheran High School in Somers, WI); “Shoeboxes for the Americas” (collection of items for children in Central and South America).
In Wisconsin Rapids, through St. Paul’s Lutheran, she supported Stuff the Bus; Hygiene Items for the Homeless; Backpacks for Students; Caring Closet of St. Paul and Mead Elementary; and SWEPS.
Faith enjoyed listening to and making music. She played piano, organ, clarinet and bass clarinet. She played clarinet in the Wisconsin Rapids Municipal Band during the summers while attending college. She played organ at three churches where she taught, and sang in the choirs of each of those churches. She also sang in the Lakeshore Lutheran Chorale while in Brillion.
Faith enjoyed drama and theater and was active in both during college. She conducted All-School Musicals at Immanuel in Waukegan.
Faith’s hobbies included reading, writing, candy making, and doing crossword puzzles and word searches.
Faith is survived by her mom, Edna; three brothers: Jim (Nancy) Haferman of West Bend, WI, Alan Haferman of Wisconsin Rapids, and Lyle (Cynthia) Haferman of Brookfield, WI; two sisters: Hope (Steve) Wolf of Fort Collins, CO, and Dawn (AB) Pomerantz of Boka Ratan, FL; 16 nieces and nephews; 22 great nieces and nephews; and other relatives, colleagues, and friends.
