Edythe Gukenberger

–

Plover, Wisconsin

Edythe Marie Gukenberger, a beloved mother, dear friend, and consummate professional, passed away on June 17, 2024, at the age of 83. Born on November 5, 1940, in Longwood, WI, the daughter of Frederick Twait and Rosie Lee (Twait) Bury, Edythe (Edie) led a life filled with strength, intelligence, and adventure.

Edie was a devoted mother to her children: Debbie (Randy) Franz, Janice Vroman, Jeff (Vickie) Gukenberger, and the late Jason Gukenberger, who tragically passed away at the young age of 17. She was also a loving stepmother to Gary (Debbie) Gukenberger and Sheri (Brian) McGinnis. Her sharp wit and quick humor were ever-present, providing comfort and joy to those around her. She also cherished her grandchildren Brandon (Samantha), Zachary (Nicole), Zoe, Darcy (Scotty), Chad (Jennifer), and great-grandchildren (Gideon, Silas, Elora, Florence, Brady, Carter, Mason, Justin, and Carley. She is further survived by sisters Patricia Richers, Freda Pryga and brother Howard Twait, and many nieces and nephews.

She maintained a loving relationship with her daughter Debbie’s exchange student, Dilnoza Griffiths (Randy), who, along with her children Dexter and Quinn, also survives her in De Forest, Wisconsin.

Despite the profound losses of her son Jason and her husband, Mearle, Edie’s resilience and toughness shone through. Jason and Mearle were the cowboys of her dreams, and she dedicated her time, money, and effort to help them follow their passions. Rodeos took her throughout Wisconsin for Little Britches Rodeos, and to clinics, ropings, and High School National Finals many times. This dedication was a reward for her as well, bringing her immense joy and fulfillment.

A trailblazer in her professional life, Edie excelled as a Customer Service Representative and later as a Marketing Manager/Director for Port Edwards/Nekoosa paper mills, which later became Georgia Pacific and then Domtar. She was known for her keen analytical mind, unwavering dedication, and remarkable work ethic. Her colleagues and clients admired her ability to navigate complex financial landscapes with ease and precision. She was a professional woman in a man's world before it was fashionable and who wasn’t contained by societal boundaries.

Edie had a passion for travel, and her adventures took her to every corner of the globe. From the bustling streets of San Francisco, Atlanta, London, and New York to the serene landscapes of Italy, Greece, Caribbean and Alaska. She embraced new cultures and experiences with an open heart and mind. Her travel stories were legendary, filled with the same wit and charm that defined her personality.

Beyond her professional achievements and love for travel, Edie was a loyal family member and cherished friend. She was always ready with a clever remark, a helping hand, or a shoulder to lean on. Her kindness, generosity, and unwavering support touched the lives of many, leaving a lasting impact on all who knew her. In recent years, she enjoyed many fun times with new and old friends through her Red Hat Ladies groups.

Her legacy lives on in her surviving children, Debbie, Janice, and Jeffrey, who carry forward her values of resilience, intelligence, and curiosity. She will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her.
