Dekker Sam Salewski

Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin

Dekker Sam Salewski

We are so deeply saddened by the loss of our Dekker Sam. He was our Dek, Dek Man, Big Guy, Most Handsome, and most importantly truly loved.

Dekker had a sad beginning born in Texas to a nasty human that thought dumping him at the side of the road was the responsible option. He was selected by Last Paw Rescue. In order to be transported to Wisconsin he needed a foster family or he would have to remain in Texas and ultimately be euthanized. We volunteered and went to Tomah to meet him on a cold Sunday morning in March. Last Paw volunteers called him “boots” due to his large feet. He was approximately 4 months old, weighed 60 pounds and had feet that filled your palm. They led Dave to the bathroom and noted the dog was stressed and filthy. By the time I had the paperwork and got to the truck, Dave had him sitting on the tailgate and confirmed he belonged to us. It took 25 minutes and we were foster failures.

We took him home to meet the rest of the family, Daniel, Sarah, his first BFF Remington and all our family and friends that entered our home. Our fur family expanded over the years and he became best of friends with Croix and Oakley and his brother and BFF forever, Jake.

Our Dekker loved laying in the sun, swimming, visiting the cottage on Lake Dubay and demolishing the best chewies. He had the strongest chompers and could easily crack logs, nuts and solid bones. He arrived early for breakfast at 5:30 am and greeted you at the door for “din din” at 5:00 pm. It’s important to note tardiness was not acceptable.

He was named “Cheddar Head AKA Cheddar” while working with friends and trainers as a puppy. He had a massive sized head and face and a strong muscular build. He could run like the wind. He would fetch and chase balls and sticks all day in the water or on the land. I have always wished for others to see the beauty of the smiling dog faces and powerful muscles.

He was dedicated and loyal to his family. I called him “my guy.” He came running when my car came home. He rested by the door waiting for my return from travels and long days. He worked late evenings and was always willing to start the day early. He loved gardening and helping himself to cucumbers, tomatoes, potatoes and watermelon. Sadly the fence was to keep Dekker out. His days were filled working outside with Dave, whatever the project he was there. He loved laying in the sun on the hottest days. He was great at riding the Kaboda and jumping shotgun into the truck. He was not the best of hunters, probably because it was more work than Dek enjoyed. However, he could easily sniff out a mouse or a vole. Dekker was the most obedient dog of them all.

Age slowed him down in the last year, but cancer reared its ugly head at the beginning of October. On the first day we met, we told him he was safe and would be loved and never hurt again. He believed us and in return gave us ten years of the best unconditional love.

The love of an animal is indescribable. The worst and hardest day to have a pet is the last day. I would relive the 10 years again just for his loyalty and love. If Dekker could share words of wisdom he would tell you there are thousands more like him and he would love for them to live his dream.

We were there for your final rest.
In our hearts we loved you the best.
