Bill was born on February 11, 1940 at Riverview Hospital, Wisconsin Rapids to Carl and Gladys Vehrs, their firstborn. He grew up on the family farm on Lynn Hill Road in Nekoosa and learned the value of hard work. Bill graduated from Alexander High School in Nekoosa in 1958. He proudly served his country in the Army National Guard from 1959 – 1966. He was united in marriage to the love of his life, Elaine Woodward in Wisconsin Rapids on December 7, 1963. They were blessed with 62 years of marriage. Bill was employed by the Nekoosa Edwards Paper Company. He received further education from Mid-State Technical College and began a career in Instrumentation, retiring from the mill in 1996.
Bill was a gentle, soft spoken, humble, kind hearted man. He was a friend to all he met and loved lending a helping hand for anyone in need. Some of his favorite things to do were camping, turkey hunting, fishing, and travelling around the US and abroad. He loved his family and cherished holding each baby as it came into his life. He saw the importance of passing on his wisdom and knowledge to the next generation from his children and on to his grandchildren and others he knew. He enjoyed working on each of the homes they lived in. He loved to fix things and helped many people over the years with different projects. He was a member of Faith Baptist Church and served as deacon, Sunday School teacher, Awana leader, and general fix it man. He led the Young at Heart group for many years. It was a joy for him to serve the Lord in these ways. In 2001 – 2007, Bill & Elaine moved to North Carolina to be closer to family, where they also joined and served at Grace Baptist Church in Wilmington during those years.
Bill is lovingly survived by his wife Elaine Vehrs, daughter Tami Mull, son Timothy (Julia) Vehrs, Grandsons Travis (Alexis) Mull, Nickolas Mull, Joshua (Emily) Vehrs, Rian (Lili) Vehrs and his adopted granddaughter Nikita Tisland.
